Timeline of events

Here is a summary of the dates since PD collapsed.

31/3/23 – Announcement

31/3/23 – Completed VMIA claim form

27/6/23 – VMIA accepted liability (I have no idea why it would take them 3 months to accept liability), maybe because of the volume of people affected? Apparently there were about 1500 homes left unfinished in Victoria alone.

Next few months were focused on getting quotes while waiting for the quantum decision which would determine the builder they recommend that we go with and how much out of pocket we will be.

Quotes received ranged between $520k (Carlton), $540k (Simonds) to $730k. Carlton quote is just on 20% which means there is no out of pocket (depending on the quantum decision), every other quote will result in out of pocket. I was planning on being an owner builder to save costs.

Told VMIA that I will be going with AJ Constructions who will help me as an owner builder to complete the work.

17/8/23 – Received quantum decision based on Simonds “revised” quote of $470k + $30k rectification works. This means that if I went with Carlton, I would have been out of pocket $20k. Not sure how they managed to get Simonds to revise their quote down that much. The quantum decision had AJ Constructions as the builder to pay out to.

I wasn’t happy with that, so I threatened to go to VCAT to find out how they could have revised the quote down so much that it would really leave me no option but to continue the build with Simonds.

24/8/23 – I got a phone call explaining that they got a special price from Simonds because they are engaging Simonds to quote on all the builds and going through VCAT would only slow the process down by at least half a year because of their backlog at the moment. Pretty much means that we had no choice but to go with Simonds to build. Just as well I haven’t signed the contract with AJ Constructions yet.

So I requested that they amend the quantum decision and replace AJ Constructions with Simonds.

13/9/23 – Finally received the amended quantum decision. Took them long enough just to change a few words. I signed and sent it back to them to begin the process with Simonds.

4/10/23 – Received documents from Simonds to sign to appoint them as the new builder

6/10/23 – New contract issued

12/10/23 – Connected electricity

18/11/23 – Simonds cleaned up weeds around the house

25/11/23 – Plaster walls arrive downstairs and upstairs and stored in the house, bricks arrived, Simonds logo goes up

2/12/23 – External scaffolding goes up but no work has started yet.
